Full Title: Fostering Resiliency: Helping our Forests and Wildlife Respond to a Rapidly Changing Climate
What are environmental leaders doing today to better prepare plant and wildlife species for changing climate conditions? While weather events like we have all recently experienced may not feel normal in 2024, current climate models show that they could be normalized sooner than we think. How we respond to these climate challenges can shape ecosystems and the fate of the species that inhabit them. This moderated panel discussion brings together forward-thinking experts from the University of Pennsylvania and beyond to shed light on strategies to foster resiliency among our native trees, birds, and mammals.
Illuminated Body: The Portraits of Barbara Earl Thomas
Tuesday, May 14,
12 p.m. -
1 p.m. Eastern
Virtual Program
more information
This talk by Emily Zimmerman, Interim Director of Exhibitions and Programs at the Arthur Ross Gallery, will look closely at the artwork of celebrated artist, writer, and thinker Barbara Earl Thomas, whose most recent portraits are on view at the Arthur Ross Gallery in Barbara Earl Thomas: Illuminated Body (February 17-May 21, 2024). Barbara Earl Thomas’ most recent series of portraits weave an exquisite tapestry of light and color to depict individuals illuminated in moments of creativity. Invoking the history of portraiture, Thomas’ nine large-scale cut paper pieces celebrate great Black cultural icons such as August Wilson, Seth Parker Woods, and Charles Johnson, alongside Thomas’ friends, family, and acquaintances. Set in contexts ranging from public performance to the quiet of daydreaming, they honor the creative spark in all its manifestations. Thomas describes her subjects with nuance and care, encouraging extended viewing of these vibrant and layered portraits. The portraits are presented with The Transformation Room, a luminous installation created from light and intricately cut Tyvek, which offers a moment of respite for reflection and inspiration. This event will include a pre-recorded conversation with Barbara Earl Thomas in advance of a live discussion with curator Emily Zimmerman.

Virtual Program
more information
Would you like to be in a book group with fellow alums from around the world, reading works by Penn Arts & Sciences faculty? Hit the books and get ready to join us for the Penn Arts & Sciences Virtual Lightbulb Café: Faculty Book Series! Our fabulous faculty authors will discuss their new books, describing the inspiration and research behind each, and answer audience questions. Bob Dylan has always been more than a musician. Whether as an icon of the social movements of the 1960s, a convert to evangelical Christianity publicly wrestling with his faith, or simply a poet of genius, Dylan has occupied a position of moral leadership for more than 50 years. In Bob Dylan: Prophet Without God, political philosopher Jeffrey Edward Green provides an overarching account of the significance of the 2016 Nobel Prize laureate’s political, religious, and ethical ideas. Dylan speaks to ideals that have animated earlier prophets—social justice, individual freedom, and adherence to God—but breaks from past tradition by testifying to the conflicts between these ideals. Green shows how Dylan has made novel contributions to the meaning of self-reliance, the quest for rapprochement between the religious and non-religious, and the problem of how ordinary people might operate in a fallen political world.

4:30 p.m. -
6:30 p.m. Eastern

We may not have realized it at the time, but the late 80’s at
Penn were the epicenter of a major mash-up of musical trends - from House and
Hip-Hop, to New Wave and Reggae - that had wide-ranging influence on the local,
national and international music scenes for decades to come. Our music and
campus celebrations crossed every racial, social and gender barrier there is,
and brought us all together in the most extraordinary way. The Class of ’89 is
going to burn down the house with this free-wheeling, multimedia exploration of
the music of our time at Penn, the impact it had, and the relationships it
forged - which has kept us tightly knit together for more than 35 years.
Featuring a live DJ and special guests, open to all classes and invited members
of the Philadelphia community – this will be the best reunion panel in the
history of Penn. Just saying.
