Join us for a virtual tour of "The Black Hero’s Journey" currently on view in the Goldstein Gallery in Van Pelt. This exhibition traces the evolution of Black comic book heroes and creators from exclusion and harmful stereotypes to groundbreaking protagonists and visionary storytellers. Through iconic characters such as Lion Man, Black Panther, Storm, Luke Cage, and Miles Morales, the exhibition explores how comics have reflected both the struggles and aspirations of Black communities while challenging ideas about who gets to be a hero. By examining the parallel journeys of the creators behind these stories, the exhibition invites visitors to consider the power of representation and ask: Who gets to be a hero, and why does it matter?

Inspired by her experiences on a 2008 Penn summer archaeology dig in Greece, Kate Myers’s C08 national bestselling novel "Excavations" is now a comedy TV series Dig soon to air on Peacock, starring Amy Poehler and Hugh Laurie. Produced by Mike Schur, co-creator of Parks & Recreation, Dig follows four women at an archaeological excavation whose discovery of an impossible artifact challenges long-held assumptions about history and gender. Join John L. Jackson, Jr., Ph.D., Provost, and Christopher Woods, Ph.D., Williams Director, Penn Museum, for a fascinating evening with Kate Myers as she unearths the story behind Excavations—from the archaeological fieldwork that inspired her debut bestselling novel to its journey from page to screen. This program originally occurred on October 21, 2026.

Join Dr. Gwendolyn DuBois Shaw, Inaugural Faculty Director of the Arthur Ross Gallery and the James and Nan Farquhar Professor of the History of Art, and Lynn Smith Dolby, Director of the Penn Art Collection, for a virtual tour of the show, followed by live Q & A. This exhibition draws on the holdings of the University of Pennsylvania, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Winterthur Museum, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Annenberg School for Communication invites all alumni for a virtual conversation with Sarah J. Jackson, author of the acclaimed new book, A Second Sight: How the Wonder and Vision of Black Mediamakers Push America Toward Freedom. In this timely and thought-provoking work, Jackson explores how generations of Black journalists, filmmakers, broadcasters, photographers, podcasters, and other media makers have helped shape American democracy by bringing critical perspectives and truths to the national conversation.  During this one-hour virtual event, Sarah J. Jackson will discuss the inspiration behind the book, its central themes, and the contemporary relevance of its insights. The conversation will be followed by an audience Q&A. Open to all alumni, this engaging online program offers an opportunity to connect with a leading scholar and author while exploring one of today's most important conversations about media, history, and civic life.

Join fellow Penn alumni for a fall day immersed in horticultural beauty, landscape history, and Philadelphia heritage. This special Homecoming excursion begins at the Morris Arboretum & Gardens of the University of Pennsylvania, located 15 miles from campus in Philadelphia's Chestnut Hill neighborhood. Participants will be welcomed by Bill Cullina, F. Otto Haas Executive Director, and enjoy guided tours of the Arboretum's 92-acre public garden. A boxed lunch will be served on the grounds following the tours.

In the afternoon, participants will travel to Andalusia Historic House, Gardens & Arboretum, located along the Delaware River in lower Bucks County. There, they will enjoy guided tours of the historic house and gardens, followed by light refreshments.

Participants may choose to travel by bus from campus or arrange their own transportation. Those traveling by bus will depart campus at 9:00 a.m. to arrive for the 10:30 a.m. program start. The bus will return to campus at approximately 5:00 p.m.; the program at Andalusia concludes at 4:00 p.m.

In fall 2025, Michael Weisberg, the Bess W. Heyman President’s Distinguished Professor of Philosophy and deputy director of Perry World House, was appointed to lead this critical work. Professor Weisberg will provide insight into initiatives already underway at the university, share his vision for our path forward, and answer questions from attendees. Join Bill Whitaker, Director of the Architectural Archives, as he leads us on a tour of the architectural masterworks on Penn's campus. More than 95 percent of the 67,000 people incarcerated in Pennsylvania will come home. What meets them when they do? Penn PERI is a new university-wide initiative building educational and employment pathways that begin in Southeastern Pennsylvania prisons and continue upon release: workshops and college credit earned inside, work experience and credentials employers recognize, and community partners who support reentry once people are home. You'll meet Penn faculty who teach behind the walls, graduate and undergraduate students supporting the work day to day, formerly incarcerated scholars helping craft the vision, and alumni providing opportunities on the other side of release. What does it really mean to be a teacher and believe in — and practice — a student-centered pedagogy? Can teaching really be learner-centered rather than teacher-centered? Really?! How does democratic teaching actually work? It’s not just about the content that is taught and learned in a course — even if that content is about democracy. It’s also got to be about the form of the learning: collaborative, open, open-ended, digressive, random (or accidental), multi-vocal, enabling disagreement, and willing to resist set or even somewhat firm conclusions. Al Filreis has aimed to teach in this mode, more or less, for his 40 years as a member of Penn’s faculty. This event brings back to campus six of Al’s former students for a wide-open discussion of wide-open discussion. Join us and discuss the discussion! Celebrate America 250 with a walking tour of colonial Philadelphia on the eve of the American Revolution. We’ll begin at the Man Full of Trouble Tavern (1759) so we can see what immigrants of this period saw when they arrived. Then we will continue to five additional stops to see other taverns, houses of worship, and governmental sites, including Christ Church (founded 1695), the spiritual home of many of the Founders (including Benjamin Franklin) and its burial grounds. We'll learn about the church's intertwined history with a later stop, Congregation Mikveh Israel (founded 1740), one of America’s earliest Jewish communities, and most closely associated with the events of the Revolution. Enjoy a discussion about the city’s founding philosophy, its unique geography, its commercial prospects, and the cultural diversity of its growing population at this pivotal and tumultuous time in American history. Led by Judith M. Guston who serves as Curator and Director of Collections Emerita at Philadelphia’s Rosenbach Museum & Library. She is a graduate of Smith College (BA, Classics), Yale University (MA, Classics), and the Winterthur Program in Early American Culture at the University of Delaware (MA).
